Your choices
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. We only set them if you click Accept. Strictly necessary cookies are always on, because the site can’t work securely without them. You can change your choice at any time with the Manage consent tab at the bottom of the screen, or the link below.
Cookies we use
Your consent choice. When you respond to our banner, we store your choice in a cmplz_ cookie for 12 months, so we don’t ask you again on every visit. This is strictly necessary.
Security. Cloudflare sets __cf_bm for 30 minutes to tell people apart from bots, and may set cf_clearance for up to a year to record that you’ve passed a security check. Wordfence sets wordfence_verifiedHuman for a day as part of blocking automated attacks. These are strictly necessary.
Signing in and comments. WordPress sets wordpress_ and wordpress_logged_in_ cookies, lasting from a single session to 14 days, only when our own team signs in to edit the site. If you comment on our journal and tick the box to be remembered, WordPress keeps your name and email in comment_author_ cookies for about a year.
Analytics, only with your consent. If you accept statistics cookies, Google Analytics sets _ga and _ga_NHNMV4Y7C6, each lasting two years, to tell visitors apart and follow sessions, so we can see how the site is used.
We don’t use advertising or social media tracking cookies.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4, through Google’s Site Kit plugin, to see which pages are popular and how people find us. Google may process this data outside the UK. You can read how Google uses data from sites that use its services, or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Managing cookies in your browser
